The 3-5-8 rule is a ratio for building a balanced arrangement: for every 3 focal flowers, use about 5 secondary flowers and 8 stems of filler or greenery. The numbers come from the Fibonacci sequence, which is why the proportions look natural rather than planned.
The three roles in an arrangement
- 3 focal flowers: the biggest, most eye-catching blooms, such as peonies, garden roses, hydrangeas or orchids.
- 5 secondary flowers: medium blooms that support the focal ones, such as spray roses, ranunculus, tulips or stock.
- 8 filler stems: small flowers and greenery that fill gaps and add movement, such as tweedia, wax flower, eucalyptus or ruscus.
Why odd numbers work
Groups of three and five are easier on the eye than pairs because they avoid perfect symmetry. Arranged in odd clusters, the flowers lead the eye around the design instead of splitting it into halves.
How to use it at home
- Place the 3 focal flowers first, at different heights, in a loose triangle.
- Add the 5 secondary flowers around them, filling the spaces between focal points.
- Finish with the 8 filler stems to soften edges and cover the mechanics.
- Scale up in the same ratio: 6-10-16 for a larger vase.
When florists break the rule
Mono bouquets use one flower only, for example 48 garden roses or 40 white tulips, and get their impact from volume rather than contrast. See our mono bouquets for that look, or our mixed bouquets for designs built on the 3-5-8 idea.
