A good Thanksgiving centerpiece is low enough to talk over, long enough to fill the middle of the table, and built in warm autumn colors. Keep it under about 30 cm (12 inches) tall so guests can see each other.
Five rules for a Thanksgiving table
- Stay low. Tall arrangements block conversation; save height for the sideboard or entry.
- Go long, not round, on a rectangular table: a low runner of flowers or two smaller arrangements works better than one big ball.
- Leave room for food. Measure the table with the serving dishes on it before you choose the size.
- Use unscented or lightly scented flowers so they do not compete with the food.
- Deliver a day early. Flowers that arrive on Wednesday are open and settled by dinner on Thursday.
Colors and flowers that work
Warm palettes suit the season: peach, apricot, burgundy, cream and soft orange. Garden roses, spray roses and hydrangeas form the base; seasonal accents such as berries, dried grasses and small pumpkins or gourds finish the look.
Baskets and boxes for the table
A low basket holds water and sits steady on the table. See our flower boxes and baskets or the Blush Hydrangea Garden Basket ($329). For a custom centerpiece sized to your table, call (424) 999-9880 with the table length and your colors.
