Peony season peaks from late April to June, when peonies from growers in the Northern Hemisphere are at their best and most affordable. Outside that window, florists get peonies from colder regions in summer and from the Southern Hemisphere in late autumn and winter, so they are available most of the year but cost more and vary more in supply.
The peony calendar
- Late April to June: main season. The widest choice of colors and the best prices.
- July and August: late-season peonies from colder northern growing areas such as Alaska.
- November to January: peonies from the Southern Hemisphere, for example Chile and New Zealand.
- The gaps in between: supply is thin. Ask before you plan an event around peonies in these months.
Why peonies cost more than roses
Peonies grow from roots that take years to mature, bloom once a year and travel far outside the main season. That is why a peony bouquet costs more than a rose bouquet of the same size, and why prices rise outside spring.
How to buy peonies that open well
Good peonies arrive as firm buds or half-open blooms. In a warm room they open in one to three days and then last several more. If you need them fully open on a specific day, tell us the date and we will plan the timing. Care tips: how to make flowers last longer.
If peonies are out of season
Garden roses and ranunculus give a similar soft, layered look. Try Pink Ruffled Roses ($209) or a mixed bouquet with hydrangeas.
